Interview with Rapper YOUNG PIFFIII Posted on June 1, 2014 By Graham J NobleHelen Ingram, Music Videos/Tracks, Musicians Blog/Interview
Helen Ingram interviews Up-and-coming Rapper Young PIFFIII.
YOUNG PIFFIII Is a rap artist from New Haven, Connecticut. He doesn’t really consider himself a ‘rapper’, but – coming from the streets – he’s seen a lot and been through a lot. Hip-hop is what he calls his God-given gift; his talent. So, back around 2009, he decided to take it seriously. In 2009, YOUNG PIFFIII joined forces with the legendary Dj Big Mike, like YOUNG, a native of Connecticut. The two put together a ‘mixtape,’ which was hailed a classic. Indeed, they called it “Welcome To Pistol Wavin’ New Haven The Classic”. The work made a name for YOUNG. In 2011-2012, YOUNG came up with “Welcome To Pistol Wavin’ New Haven 1.5 (The Valley Forge Vision), on which, he collaborated with “The Empire.” and Big Mike. This project got the artist known throughout his state and local radio stations.
YOUNG PIFFIII says he is now at the top of his game. He is the number five Connecticut Artist On Connecticut charts and he’s not letting up. In April, he released his new EP, “Vision”
HI: What type of music did you grow up listening to?
YP: Some of the first artists were Big Daddy Kane, Rakim Slick Rick, Green Day, LL Cool J, Snoop Dog, The Lox, Mobb Deep, Wu Tang Clan. Those were some of the names that, basically, introduced me to hip-hop and made me a fan. Also, Green Day introduced me to rock at a young age.
HI: What made you enter the music industry?
YP: I wouldn’t say entering the music industry, because I’m underground we don’t get as much recognition. What made me want to become a musician was just the influence of all the instruments and people that was around me. My mom started it all by actually buying me my first karaoke machine. I used to practice and pretend that I was performing and rapping. I didn’t know what I was doing, LOL, as I got older. I used to stay at my cousins house a lot, and his dad was a music producer. He produced for Stezo & Etc he also has met a lot of household names. Also he used to make a lot of music and I used to always just be around watching listening and learning in the studio. It made me want to do it, so when some of my family members used to be doing songs I used to try my hardest to write something that was worthy enough of being on the actual song. So my producer/owner/cousin Keith Blackman used to push me, and tell me if I wanted to get on the mic its gunna have to be something hot, and from there that’s where it all began.
HI: What inspires you when you perform?
YP: Just my passion for music. As well as the fans that come out of their way, to checkout not just me but the actual artist that they came to support. Also just wanting to prove everybody wrong who believes in the myth that there isn’t any good musicians in Connecticut. They always say that CT artist can’t rap, and that there will never be one to make it. Which doesn’t make any since when Stezo, & Cassie did already. So that’s what inspires me.
HI: Do you write you own lyrics?
YP: Of course, nobody has ever written anything for me. Even if they wanted to I always said no! Unless there an actual feature, so they’ll write the hook or something but that’s as far as it goes. But I’m actually a registered writer with ASCAP. So I have my writers license, I can write for anyone that I choose, as long as the paper work & the money right. It’s funny.. cause my favourite subject in school was English, that was the class that i got my best grades in So i feel like music itself was my calling. As far as just being a writer & etc
HI: Where do you draw your inspiration from?
YP: That’s a good question. And I will try to answer this in the most humble way as possible. To be honest I don’t think I have anyone that inspires me. I don’t have someone who I say, or have said this is the guy I want to be like. It just never crossed my mind. It may sound funny but I’m as humble as they come. I try to stay away from having a favourite artist or etc., because the more you listen to me. You get adapted and start to sound like them, because you forgot how to create your own melody. If there’s anything I do.. I just study craft. Like if you were to ask me who was one of the best rappers craft wise, I would tell you aren’t anybody touching the NO rapper CurrenSy I feel like he’s taught me a lot. As far as when it comes to taking my time when I’m rapping be patient in between my ins and outs my dubs and Etc. I think I’ve got better by learning that from him. But no matter how much I try I can’t touch him. lol. Cause his be dead on he’s never over saying his lines. When all lines are levelled he’s never louder than the one word that he said from his other line His lines stick together like glue even when he adds emphasis. So shout out to Spitta.
HI: Is some of the inspiration drawn from real life experiences?
YP: Absolutely! Everything I spit is about my life. If you would listen you would probably think I’m actually talking about a certain person when I’m actually not. That’s just me telling you what I’m going threw at the moment or what I’ve been going through. I also like to teach people through my music. I teach them certain valuable principles that were passed down to me, so they can learn from me and live through me. So when the opportunity presents itself they’ll know what to do. If u listens to my music you won’t hear me saying anything that I’m not supposed to be saying. You won’t hear me rapping about somebody else life, cause then that defeats the whole purpose right? And if I ever did I wouldn’t last for too long. Because believe me dudes from my neighbourhood and dudes that live the life that others pretend to live would check me a faster then when they check for the money. Everything is the truth with me. I leave that for the frauds.
HI: Tell us about your style of music?
YP: That’s another good question. I think I fall into the category of the slow rappers. I rap at a slow pace like Currently. Although I can speed it up and I do speed it up sometimes, but you won’t hear me spitting like Migo’s. They rap really fast, if you listen to me and then to them you’ll see why I’m saying what I’m saying. Also I don’t think I have one style. I think it just comes naturally. I don’t go into a song saying ok, this is the way that I’m going to rap, or this is how I’m going to sound. I just let it flow, and I even impress myself sometimes. Sometimes it take me awhile to get adapted to the way that I rap on a certain track, I have to listen to it over and over to finally accept it, and hear the way my lines connect and etc. It’s has to be near perfect. I’m my own worst critic so if it isn’t right I’ll do it over. So if there’s any way to sum up my style of music I would just call it different or call it YOUNG PIFFIII [laughing].
HI: What makes you different from other artists in your genre?
YP: I can rap on any beat and not sound like that actual genre. I’ll still sound like me… I can rap on any beat at any tempo. You can’t find too many artists that can do that, that are versatile like that nor would I would call a jack of all trades. And I think I also adapt to the sound of the instruments well to determine the feel of the song, and the direction that’s it’s going into.
HI: Tell us about your journey so far.
YP: I don’t really look back too far. The only thing I do think about is the years that I’ve rapping for. I’m not impressed by much I don’t feel like I’ve did enough. The goal still has yet to be completed… I want to be great. I’m like Peyton Manning… I think I got the will of him; the only thing I think about is what I’m not doing… I’m not doing enough of this, what I can do better… What can I do to get my buzz out more, constantly challenging myself, and never getting comfortable, I’m always going to be that way because that’s what makes you great. I think that’s what you would call animal ambition as 50 cent refers too. You have to be born with it… and can’t just say it and do it, u have to not be able to notice that you’re doing it and that’s when you know your something special. When you never take the credit for what you did or do, unless you have too. But as far as some of my biggest miles stones I can name of few that I smile at for about 3 seconds and then move on here’s a few: I have a song in London, I have a song in Canada. My google plus musician profile has 40,000 views. So I’ve been viewed 40,000 times on google that’s a plus to me. I’ve moved over 3500 units [Not all being sold] of Cds in 2012 in my state. My mixtape Expect the unexpected that I did in 2013 did about 15,000 plays. I did over 100 + songs in my career. And I’m creeping up on 100 songs in less than 5 months but other than that I still got work to do, Also I can’t forget my first mixtape that I did with the legendary DJ Big Mike from CT. I think that made my name… I was the first in my city to do it. I think that’s history.. Big mike is now on tour with French Montana.
HI: Where can people find you on the internet?
YP: The most important places are Facebook, Twitter, Hulkshare and Newpiff.blogspot.com.
HI: Are you performing anywhere over the summer?
YP: Yes soon… I haven’t booked any shows yet. I just have been working on putting new projects out. I just released a new EP, so when it’s time to do shows will have a whole bunch of new music for the people to jam out to. As well as new Music videos, and merchandise on the way.
HI: Do you have any music which people can buy?
YP: Not yet… I’ve been giving it out to them for free. But I will soon.
HI: If you were to work with another other artist/band who would it be and why?
YP: It would have to be with a mainstream artist like Jhene Aiko, or the Weeknd or CurrenSy. Why… I think because I still haven’t really did any songs with organic singers like the ones that I named. I feel like I can produce hit records with the singers that I named. And as far as working with spitta goes I just want to see what type of song we can create. He create one for us I create one for us… I want to see how he would sound on something that I create and if he would like it.
HI: What advice would you give fellow solo artists?
YP: Stays independent keep, working. Never sell your soul to the devil for a gift that god has blessed you with. Never think you made it. Take advice; always listen even If you think it’s not worth it. Be original, Take time off from doing a lot of songs do a song a week to keep your style fresh stay the course. Don’t let anyone take you off your journey, no matter how hard it gets. Be true and stay true to you and all your supporters be you, and don’t change for no one. Let god be your guidance and armour. And let your views be universal don’t be one track minded… Read about things that have nothing to do with music expand your horizons expand your minds. There are things that are way more important, and interesting then just music in the universe. And last, but not least, follow Alex Jones. Infowars.com. Peace & Love.
YOUNG just dropped another tape, the digital version “From My Block To Yo’ Block (It’s Infantry),” which is available on Datpiff.com, along with all his other Mixtapes. All downloads are free.
